Synopsis
La Vida: A Journey of Latinos Throughout Nebraska uses personal interviews
and oral histories to describe the lives of Latinos across Nebraska. Photographs,
maps and paintings from the Nebraska State Historical Society, as well
as from museums and archives, show the details of Latino life in Nebraska.
From Spain, from Mexico, from 22 countries of Central America and South
America, Latino people have come to settle and make a new life in Nebraska.
The journey of Latinos to Nebraska began with the first Spanish presence
in Nebraska: conquistadors, trappers and traders who came seeking fortunes
in the New World.
In the first decades of the twentieth century, families fleeing war-torn
conditions arrived in growing numbers from Mexico to work agricultural
and industrial jobs. In the latter part of the century, Latinos from the
Caribbean and Central and South America began to arrive, seeking better
opportunities and political freedom.
| Nebraska's Latino people have made this journey for reasons as varied
as the people themselves. But always they have shared one dream: to
make a better life. |
